National Seminar on Public Health & Health Tourism

 

A National Seminar on “Public Health and Health Tourism” was organized by AIPH University, Bhubaneswar on 11thJanuary, 2019. Around 80 delegates from different parts of the country participated including students, faculty and invited dignitaries. Dr. J. Mahapatra, Vice-Chancellor of University delivered the welcome address. Mr. Vivek Pattanayak, former Secretary of Tourism, Govt. Odisha and Joint Secretary Tourism, Govt. of India, delivered the presidential address. Mr. Pattanayak highlighted the importance of globalization which facilitated the travel of people across the globe. He also mentioned that seeking medical care at an affordable cost from a foreign country is one of the most important reasons for increasing global travel and medical tourism. Dr. B.S. Das, Former Emeritus Medical Scientist Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, Chief Guest of the seminar, spoke that Public health has not got equal importance like clinical Health after independence, though it has been considered as a part of health. It is because we have not gathered adequate information on causes for epidemiology. That’s why it is difficult to prevent and control the disease like Malaria, HIV etc. Most of the disease control programmes implemented by the Government have failed. Dr. M. K. Satapathy, Dean Regional Institute of Education delivered the keynote speech on Environmental Health. Dr. Satapathy described how sustainable development is directly linking to the public health by putting the different factors of the human development index. He also gave the example of the development of sensor street light which was implemented in Bhopal is responsible for attracting and killing the mosquitos. Moreover, he added that genetically modified indoor plants recently used in developed countries for accumulation of the various toxic air pollutants. Dr. Jaya Dubey delivered a talk in technical session on “Interplay of Environment, Public Health & Health Toursim”. Dr. S. N. Parida, Former Prof. of Neonatology, SCB Medical College presided over the Technical Session. Dr. Parida led the technical session describing mainly the current status of medical tourism and its potential adverse effect on public health in India. Various papers on Public Health and Health Tourism were presented by the delegates and student participants including Mrs. Babita Nayak, Public Health Professional, Maryland, USA. In the concluding session Ms. Adishree Nayak, a student of Public Health from Maryland University shared her experiences in Public Health Education in the USA. Dr. J. R. Rout, convener of the seminar introduced the guests. Dr. P.R. Misra, Registrar of AIPH University gave the vote of thanks.
