World Mental Health Day: October 10, 2021

 

The world has witnessed the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in numerous ways.  Undoubtedly, it has increased awareness about the importance of mental health.  And this is reflected in the tremendous attention given to this year’s “World Mental Health Day” celebrations everywhere. This year’s theme, “mental health in an unequal world” has put the focus on addressing the mental health disorders among those who are already vulnerable and facing considerable challenges. AIPH University organized a program led by registrar, Dr. K. K. Rout, to mark this day with student poster presentations and lectures.  The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.P. Dash chaired this event and Dr. Sareeta Behera, consulting psychologist and mental wellness expert, founder and managing director of Aashna Zindagi was the chief guest. As a symbol of solidarity, acceptance, and belongingness, the Green Ribbon was worn by all partakers.

In a world in which about one billion people suffer from mental health disorders, speakers highlighted the significance of mental health in today's era, prevalence statistics of mental illnesses across the world, types of mental health problems, Covid-19 pandemic conditions and aggravation of mental instability, preventive measures, importance of clinical intervention and counselling and fostering of mental health and well-being of all. This year’s campaign slogan, "Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality" is aimed to generate efforts to deal with critical problems related to stigma, discrimination and denigration suffered by individuals and caregivers on the spectrum of mental health Issues. Adding more meaning and impact to the World Mental Health Day Observance, the young and dynamic students of the AIPH University expressed their concerns, empathized with the cause and communities, narrated their experiences, developed various awareness and advocacy-based posters and participated in the activities with great vigor and enthusiasm.
