International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Feb 11

The United Nations General Assembly declared February 11, 2022, as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This year’s theme is “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Water Unites Us.” The Vice-Chancellor of AIPH University, Padma Shri Prof. Dash, spoke about different diseases that are caused due to unhygienic water and the importance of women’s empowerment worldwide. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in scientific organisations. Ms. Subha Rashmi Mishra, a student of MSc (Botany) and Ms. Subhashreemalini Sahoo, an MPH student, expressed their views on safe water and hygiene, and the various ways in which women scientists can reduce the risk of infections and death of infants and mothers.

Dr. Rout, registrar, spoke on sustainable and millennium development goals and achieving one of the priority missions through providing fair and impartial share of clean water access to all women and girls. Now women and girls in various categories such as tribal, ethnic, mentally and physically disable, caste, religion and culture have been brought under a single umbrella. All these measures have helped in reducing the water borne diseases but also in saving a lot of hours that are spent in searching and collecting water and days that are missed from schools due to lack of toilets during menstrual period. Regarding the sanitation he explained the use of bleaching iodine, halogen tablets, charcoal and use of boiling water. He also touched upon the building of infrastructure and investment through providing reverse osmosis tools in each village and the awareness at large that can bring about solutions all over the globe.

It is important to recognize that a majority of students at AIPH University are girls who are being trained to take up inspiring roles in science and make a difference in the society.
