National Science Day (Feb 28), 2022
The Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman made a remarkable discovery in the field of spectroscopy which was named after him as the Raman Effect and for which he was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 1986, to recognize his remarkable scientific work, on the recommendation of National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), the Indian government designated Feb 28 as the National Science Day and the first one was celebrated in 1987. The day is celebrated to commemorate his scientific contribution and to increase awareness of the importance of science. The theme for National Science Day for this year is “'Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future”.
The faculty and staff excitedly participated in various activities that were organized to mark this day at AIPH University campus. The program started off with an enthusiastic welcome address by MSc Zoology (1st year) students, Ms. Samarpita Sarangi and Ms. Bidya Aradhita Das. This was followed by an informative presentation on this year’s theme by Prof. Niranjan Behera, Dean, School of Biological Science, in which he emphasized on the integration of Science and Technology for sustainable development and explained the relevance of the theme in the context of sustainable future of our country. The first-year MSc students, Ms. Batini Amritarani (Botany), and Ms. Baishali Kharsel (Zoology), expressed their views on “Life on land” (SDG No. 15) and “Gender equality” (SDG No. 5), respectively. Later on, Prof. Pradeep K. Panda, Dean School of Public Health, elucidated the audience about the goals of sustainable development and its distinction from millennium development goals. Overall, the occasion was successfully observed to emphasize and reiterate the necessity of expanding the understanding of applications of science and technology for a sustainable future.
